It is said that followers of the otter spirit go on pilgrimages to the ocean from time to time to collect shells to return to the River Otter Spirit as a sign of respect and homage to their patron spirit. Some view this as a way to symbolize the balance between the River otter spirit and the Sea otter spirit by offering an exchange of smoothed river rocks for Scallop shells and vice versa.
