Chess Puzzle #18: The Winning Distraction
Zugzwang (German for "compulsion to move", pronounced [ˈtsuːktsvaŋ]) is a situation found in chess and other turn-based games wherein one player is put at a disadvantage because of their obligation to make a move; a player is said to be "in zugzwang" when any legal move will worsen their position.
Thus sayeth the Chess God. :D So in essence what it means is kinda what the above illustrates. See, there's a move here thats gonna totally wreck Black and pretty much put the game out reach. But you have to think about it a little bit because its sneaky. It forces a losing move essentially for Black. Of course, boris never throws in the towel, so i finally checkmated the bastard in about 20 more moves. :D
What did White play... AND WHY?

White Queen to A6
Black Queen to A6 takes White Queen
White Bishop to A6 takes Black Queen
(at this point, there is no winning move for Black. If Black Rook B8 withdraws...White Bishop A6 to B7 Checkmate...otherwise the following:
Black Rook B8 to B1 takes White Rook
White Rook F1 to B1 takes Black Rook
White Bishop (A6) to B7...checkmate
(I am an aggressive player, so if I missed something please point it out! thanks!

IF Black Queen does not take the bait and holds pat and Black makes a delaying move, then:
White Queen to A7 Check...Black Queen must take White Queen A7
White Bishop C5 takes Black Queen at A7 then either:
Black King White Bishop at A7 OR Black Rook at B8 takes White Rook at B1
If King takes Bishop, White Rook at B1 takes Black Rook at B8
King takes White rook at B8 if that, then White Rook at F1 to B1 Check forces King at B8 to move...then it becomes a chase and forces the Black King into a running battle.
White Queen to A7 Check...Black Queen must take White Queen A7

This is one of my fave situations, when your opponent has absolutely zero chance to snake out. :D
Bc6 and Black doesnt have a prayer.
If Black takes bishop ..Qc6?? - Queen takes a7 and mate.
So Boris did really the only move it could to prolong the agony, ..Rxc5, threatening queen...
But its not a threat at all as White has the zugzwang, the continuation of BxQ+.
Boris' has no choice, its rook has gotta take the bishop; King sure can't, because of the white rook patrolling the B-file.
So after ..RxB... white can now safely snap off that threatening rook. Boris doesnt resign, like i said, so I had to play another 10 moves to win.
HOWEVER, this was kind of a trick question in a way, because Bc6 doesnt just put Boris on the ropes - its a forced checkmate in SIX moves:
Boris: Rook takes bishop (the only real move it had.)
Me: Queen takes Rook!! (yep, totally ignoring the BxQ. Not only that but now I protect the pinning bishop with the babe.)
Boris: doesnt matter what he does here, if ..QxB, QxQ+ (and forced mate in 2 after ..Rb7, Qb7++) Or Boris can try ..Bxd4 and try another queen threat, but AGAIN that nasty pinning zwugzwang of a bishop can just take Queen for check and Black is stuck right back again where he was! forced to take the bishop again, so ..RxB and White delivers the death blow, Qf8+ (forced mate in 1 ..Rb8 and RxR++)
So our game continued after that bishop pin: Bc6
1... Rxc5
2. Qxc5 ..e5
3. Rxb7 ..Rxb7
4. Qb5 ..Bc8
5. Bxb7+ ..Bxb7
6. Qe8+ ..Bc8
7. Qxc8#
And thats how you manhandle a chess computer, dawg.
I love games like this...where the win is so overwhelming you savor it... :D
