Perhaps they eyepatches are like the flower in the ear thing. Left eye = available Right eye = taken No patches = slut

I'd read somewhere that the eyepatches were to keep one eye adjusted to darkness, so they could switch between abovedecks and belowdecks easily by switching the patch, rather than coming below and having to wait for their eyes to adjust (since they didn't have electronic lighting, and fire on a wooden ship wasn't the greatest of ideas). It was a bit of speculation, of course, but the theory does seem sound to me. ^_^;;
