A Geek and His Dragon – Part 1
Every day was practically a sunny day. It was days that rained where things were truly an event for Jake. The tickling feeling of water falling from miles into the sky was a delightful experience that felt refreshing every time.
Alas, it was not a rainy day, but a sunny one where the wind blew a cool breeze, completely absent of any temperature discomfort that could be brought by the ball of hydrogen so very very far away.
Jake enjoyed his time outside, the sounds of the ocean in his ears, every ‘whoooooosh’ of the pulling and pushing tide its very breath. It truly never got old and had a place in his most cherished memories.
His cabin was just a few minutes walk away, yet Jake sat on the ground with a laptop on his, well, lap. Jake sat against a tree, his back facing the ocean so the sunlight reflecting did not hurt his eyes. It’s not that he was ignoring nature, on the contrary, he was simply relaxing the way he enjoyed, which was a slower-paced computer game that casually tugged at his cognitive skills. A pair of earbuds connected in a half loop, forming a U, hung from his neck like a necklace, the buds themselves connected by magnets so there was little chance they would slip off without an external force. His favorite black and camo patterned net hat with a white beach wave emblem stitched to it adorned his head.
Meanwhile, the young lad leaned forward, being indulged in a particularly challenging portion of the game. The mouse shifted over the trackpad on the grass, clicking repeatedly as a sign of the activity, and Jake was so close to-
“Whatcha playing~?”
“AH!” Jake yelped so loud when the words were spoken directly into his ear no more than a foot away. Accompanied by the fast gust of air blowing onto his face with it, the volume was louder than it should have been with a soft tone. Before he even hit the ground, having been so startled his body flew to the side, Jake knew who it was.
“I swear Faith…” Jake muttered, but it was lost in the rapture of laughter.
Yellow eyes floated midair, as did a mouth curled into a smile, clamorous with movement. One could see generally where the dragon’s body was when looking for the shimmer of movement or where the transparent view didn’t quite look right with the background. Then she revealed herself, individual scales revealing their shamrock green and golden yellow beauty in a wave pattern from her head to the tail distantly looping around Jake’s body, ready to snatch her human if she pleased, though at the moment it only poked his side.
Jake batted away the tail, managing to quickly calm himself down despite the beating rush of his heart. He couldn’t help but check his laptop, relieved it was undamaged by the dragon’s antics, and put it in his backpack, ignoring the dragon for the seconds it took on purpose in retaliation.
Big mistake. Faith didn’t like being ignored, making it apparent when her chin flopped on Jake’s entirety from the neck down.
“Hi Jake~” she teased, her eyes crossed looking at the pouting face.
“Get off me you lizard!” Jake audibly strained, feebly attempting to push the dragon off him. “BLEH!” he reacted when the tongue shot from her mouth and slurped his face in less than a second.
The soft underside past the bony chin shook with Faith’s giggling. “Come on love, you’re happy to see me~.”
A forfeiting sigh emanated from the lad as his head fell to the grass. “Fine, yeah, just get off me so I can hug you.”
“You can do it from there~” Faith smirked, “I liked feeling you squirm under my chin, I’ll have to do it more often~.”
Rolling his eyes, Jake slid his hands out from beneath the dragon, reaching up and wrapping them as best he could. The vibrating purring making his chest feel fuzzy left him admittedly smiling, and since he did love her, he leaned his head up and kissed Faith’s bottom lip. “Happy?”
“Very~” Faith whispered, lifting her head off her human. She had laid herself down casually, one arm crossed over the other as she watched Jake pick himself off the ground. “You gotta work on making it easier to resist teasing you~.”
Jake stood up, wiping the grass off the back of his shirt. “Can’t remove this charm y’know?” he played along, flirting back.
“Then there’s nothing to stop me from hounding you~” Faith smiled, showing off a portion of the whites of her teeth.
Jake walked over to her, stepping up onto her arms, knowing she didn’t mind. “You know you could work on your self-control yourself?”
“But I don’t want to! Why shouldn’t I come out and greet you in my enthusiastic way~?” Faith leaned her head within Jake’s reach.
“Because then I’ll be more inclined to treat you the way I know you like~” swooned Jake, grabbing hold of the end of her muzzle.
“What is that, love~?”
“You know full well, stroking your scales, rubbing your underbelly the way you love, and just spoiling you~” flirted Jake, petting the sweet spots on Faith’s muzzle that earned him slack eyes and purrs.
“Yes… oh right there…” huffed the dragon, angling her head to let the scratches the good areas.
Walking towards Faith’s chest, Jake dragged his hands across the golden scales, from chin to neck and at last, chest, spreading his arms out and letting himself fall against the warm surface. The warmth became enveloping, and Jake didn’t need to open his eyes to know it was his dragon’s arms wrapping around him. It was such a familiar, comforting feeling that Jake lost himself already in the void of relaxing bliss.
All that entered his ears were the crashing waves, seagulls, and the thumping of her heart. Jake opened his eyes, seeing that the encompassing embrace of his dragon cast a shadow and that the light reflected off the nearby area seemed brighter, and as a result, felt a little different than looking out from the exit of a cave.
It was serene to Jake, and he felt himself sink closer against Faith’s scales, the warm-blooded body of hers soothing to the touch.
One of Faith’s arms moved away from the embrace, to which Jake didn’t pay any mind, however, the sound of scraping wood caught his attention. Peeking out, Jake saw the massive sword-sized talon carve a shape into the palm tree trunk. It was with absolute gentleness as any real measure of Faith’s draconic strength would easily knock over the tree itself.
And when she pulled back the talon, there it was: a heart in the tree.
Jake smiled, and it hadn’t been the first time. Now and then, he saw such markings in rock and wood around his home and other locations, bringing a surge of happy memories like that of a flashback.
“Really? You scare the daylights out of me and this is worth dulling your beautiful talon~?” Jake said to Faith, unable to help but play dangerously with a small flirt.
The shade went away, but the shadow of the massive dragon remained that when Jake looked up it was as though her smile radiated a halo belonging to angels.
“My dear little human~” Faith’s talon traced along Jake’s chin, who felt the traces of sawdust linger on his skin. “The day has only begun~.”
With that said, the dragon borderline lunged her head downward, startling her human in the slimmest of moments before her scaly lips touched Jake’s. It seemed impossible with the dragon’s head far larger than Jake himself, but much practice allowed Faith to apply just the right amount of force that she could make the move without smothering her precious Jake’s entire face.
“Love you~.”
