I mean, admittedly that's kind of what happened in the one time I got the idea drawn, though some drive-in theatres do use an FM transmitter so you can just use your own car stereo system instead.
Though in this classic piece by Chaswari either everybody's got earbuds or they're just using big speakers like at a concert.

There's actually a 'sail-in theatre' here in Toronto in the summer; they set up a big projection screen down at the waterfront and you can watch a movie from your boat. That one basically has to use the FM radio method of playing the soundtrack, since the only other possible option would cause noise complaints from a good chunk of downtown.
