This is inspired by a speech from a very whimsical French play called The Madwoman of Chaillot about an eccentric Parisian woman trying to rid the world of evil. The speech is given by a character called the Ragpicker, using garbage as an example of how the world is less beautiful than it used to be. It sounds exactly like the kind of speech a raccoon might make when raccoons wax poetic, so I had Scarlet play the part.
If anyone's interested, there's a movie out there starring Katherine Hepburn, with the Ragpicker played by my hero Danny Kaye (I gave Scarlet Danny's blonde curls here).
There's also a lesser-known musical version called Dear World that won Angela Lansbury her second Tony, and I'd better stop before I start theater-geeking any more.
