"The sphinx is a creature with the body of a lion or lioness and the head of a human god or goddess. In ancient Egypt, the sphinx was a spiritual guardian and protector of the Pyramids of Giza. The winged sphinx, the most famous in legend, was said to have terrorized the mortal people by demanding the answer to a riddle taught to her or him by the Muses.
"What is it that has one voice and yet becomes four-footed and two-footed and three-footed?" If answered incorrectly the deity would devour a human each time which was truly terrifying.
The sphinx represents different things in various cultures. In Greek mythology, the sphinx is viewed as an evil being who eats humans. However, in Egyption mythology, the sphinx is seen as sacred royalty and power."
