Extreme influence by Vaughn Bode - i wasn't trying to copy his style, but i was borrowing large portions of it. but i was also doing stylistic things he didn't do such as the fine-line shading (although Bode and Berni Wrightson did do a few "Purple Pictography" comic strips together) ... there's also a weird blending of Bode and Stan Salai's version of Moebius' shading on the close foreground dirt/rocks.
But i wasn't thinking much of these influences - i just wanted to draw this dramatic scene and all my influences that would make the drawing work best just happened from habit and instinct so to speak.

Near zero research on the rifle design. It always pains me when i see artists draw badly deformed musical instruments, and i probably should have done some research on rifle design, but it was originally just a little late night pencil fantasy ...not sure if i even had the interwebs to look stuff up back then.

The original inking had a thought balloon in the upper left that read : " No ! A Kalanova ‘64 ! ... I must be dreaming ... ah...No way will it work ... or even be repairable ... It’s been lying here for years ! But ... if it’s OK ... IF ... then it’s worth a fortune !!! " ... a 'fortune' as imagined as imagined by this destitute wanderer might be a new shoes, a new knife, and maybe even a bow. But .... as i saw the image at the time her thought balloon was just her wishful thinking - she was going to have to use that rifle to survive an attack of RoadWarrior-esqe bad guys - etc....
