It was as if the mask was calling him.
It didn't matter that the thing was constructed from and painted with earthly material. Ultimately, the fact remained that it was a demon that whispered the design into his ears. And once the demon's design was achieved, the mask was no longer an object of this world but merely the gateway to another.
He knew that as he looked inscriptions within the mask sitting at the centre of the ritual circle. On the left and right were the alchemical symbols for Mercury and Sulphur: Mind and Soul. On the bottom was the symbol for Black Sulphur: The Leviathan Cross so often associated with demons. And at the centre was the golden image of a Great Serpent, it's fanged mouth bared against a star it was preparing to swallow whole. Painted as they were with ordinary paint, they looked to him as if they were glimmering with an unearthly sheen. The longer he looked, the more he could see through the inscriptions and into the yawning, crimson abyss ahead. Over the empty eye sockets of the mask, he could swear he could see glimeers of gold flames hanging intangibly.
He had prepared for it all. On his face were the symbols required for the ritual, his forehead adorned with a glyph of interlocking spirals and two prongs reaching up like a pair of horns. It was the same symbol adorned on the forehead of the demon's mask itself. To those who could read, it displayed the name of the demon: Sidal, the Golden One, the Fetterless Priest.
"I give myself, Mind and Soul to you, o' Sidal, you the Golden One! Unmake me, o' demon of the Great Serpent Apophis, so that you may remake me! Unmake me, so we may become one!"
He lowered the mask onto his face, letting it sit comfortably on his face. For a moment, he felt nothing, wondering if he had gotten a critical element of the ritual wrong. Or maybe, this whole thing had been a delusion that had gone on for far too long.
The doubts lasted only a split second. It was in his heart he first felt it, a heat. One that felt like excitement or arousal as much as it felt like an actual burning ember setting his heart aflame, slowly spreading through his body. His limbs started to tingle first, then began to tremble. He remained in the ritual circle and on his knees, his arms outstretched as he welcomed the sensations. The mask was starting to feel tighter and tighter around his head until he was unsure if he could pull it off, even if he wanted.
The sensation of the burning embers soon reached his eyes, forcing him to blink them. The burning in his eyes didn't stop but intensified, the bright golden flames, once barely perceptible, now impossible ignore. He could feel a presence inside, reasuring him that this is all as it was meant to be.
"Open your eyes," the demon whispered from within. "See the world as I do."
He opened his eyes.
This is the first of a three-part series I got from
Thorlath987 focusing on my demon Sidal. I was looking to get a piece that really emphasized the otherworldliness of demons and I always felt images Thorlath did were spot on with the mood-and-feel that I feel is appropriate for a demonic being. It developed rapidly from a single pic to a full-blown transformation sequence and I am ok with that. Using my human appearance instead of my cheetah was something we discussed and agreed on, as it would make the transformation feel a bit more tangible and striking. It's unusual to see myself in drawing like that.
Originally I was going to post them all when all three parts are complete, but I am impatient and been wanting to post these up for ages. So here goes ^^
I am not sure what exactly Sidal is. He has been around my head for a long time. Even slightly predates my cybergoth self. But until the September of 2020, he hadn't really presented himself to me and I didn't fully settle on his appearance until earlier this year when I've worked on the mask. He isn't "me" in the way Russ is and he isn't replacing the cybercheetah. Rather, I see him as a companion character of sorts. And let him wear my skin now and then.
