"Digimon
D-d-d-Digiiimon, Digital Monsters, Digimon are the champions!"
Probably the best thing about the weekend was the huge bloc of awesome new Saturday morning cartoons! The hare raucously sang along as he swung his action figures around. Gallantmon was throwing a his shield like Captain America at the Green Lantern, who was trying to stop him from reaching the Technodrome! It totally didn't make any sense, and it absolutely didn't have to, as long as it was COOL!
He chirred softly and nestled into the carpet, his big, cotton-stuffed tail making a soft 'thumph!' as it landed. His paws fumbled for the remote touchpad, gesturing across its featureless glass surface. It was funny, in a way; the first time he watched this, it had been with a remote control the size of a shoe. It had an ugly, faux-wooden panel that was littered with narrow buttons that looked like ants. That, and he could only watch one or two episodes at a time. Now...
His eyes lit up as the screen populated with list after list of episodes!
"Ooohh, they have the whole season on here! Several seasons, in fact!!!"
Sirocco wagged happily and thumped his paws. Maybe he'd make this Saturday morning last all day!
Am a lifer! X3
The story is kind of ironic, really. When I was a kid, I really wanted to like Pokemon, but I couldn't tune in to the channel it aired on. That world was somewhat closed off to me. Thankfully, there was another show coming out on a station that I did pick up. Surely, it would be the same thing, right...?
I was super exicted for the first episode, and it just so happened that my dad was up early that day. He sat down and watched it with me, and just did not get it at all. "Not even entertaining..." I remember him saying. That kind of broke my interest in it.
I came back a few episodes later, when Biyomon digivolved into Birdramon for the first time and was like... "wait, this is kind of cool." So I started watching the series and got caught up pretty quickly. While the first few episodes are kind of rough, you realize right away that Digimon had something Pokemon never did: a story with continuity. Action that wasn't quite as formulaic. Cool monsters that weren't necessarily so saccarine and 'safe'. Whereas every Pokemon is formulated to be inoffensive and kind of bland, Digimon are allowed to be weird, funky, cool, or sexy! The primary villain of the first arc, Devimon, was lanky and weird-looking, there was a buff lionbro, and a hamster evolved into an angel. The protagonists were lost, scared, and in legitimate danger.
Essentially, Digimon was meant for -big- kids! X3
And that still holds true! I feel like the Pokemon franchise, while still fun and enjoyable, has kind of stagnated. The games have established a tried and true formula that never deviates too much, while Ash Ketchum has been reliving a purgatorial adventure for more than 20 years.
Not to say Digimon is perfect. There have been some stinkers along the line. Season o4, for instance. Seriously... how the HELL did they start with the premise 'what if the kids turned IN TO the Digimon' and screw it up so bad? That is RIGHT up my alley, and yet... even the 'beast type' Digimon were just armored humans. Not to mention the nightmare of level inconsistencies. Lucemon was the big, bad dangerous villain, and he was a ROOKIE!! And then there's the hot mess that is the story, where...
*continues ranting incoherently, even with the 'mute button' in his muzzle* X3
