I've been playing Nethack off and on since 2006, and I finally beat it tonight.
And yes, Barkanas I through Barkanas LXXII all died in the dungeon trying to find the amulet. Barkanas VII was the closest.

I generally find it easier to progress to Sokoban and complete that first, and then go back to the gnomish mines afterwards. That said, dying and bad luck are inherently a part of Nethack; the trick is hoarding up enough valuable items in such a way that you can weather the wrath of Random Number God.
