Yup, Christmas is almost here.
We all know the stress of the holidays; drinking Aunt Clara's homemade eggnog that's too much egg and not enough nog, playing chicken with that semi truck for the last spot in the mall parking lot, finding that "some assembly required" means that you have to grow the tree and plane the boards to make the rocking horse.
That's nothing compared to what our fine retail customer service folks must endure.
I know what it's like. I worked in a department store *mumbles* years ago.
I remember the holiday madness that comes from trying to make a whole year's sales in 1 week. It's enough to make a good dog break his leash.
So I've decided to do something about that.
I'm going to visit every single retail outlet in every state all across the US.
No store will be spared. This dog is going to brighten up the day of each sales clerk one by one. Spreading holiday cheer and bolstering the economy, that's me.
I started with this lovely lady at a boutique in Huntington Beach. She helped me find this kitschy cowboy hat for my right ear. I told her my dirty three wise men joke. As you can tell from her face, she was incredulous that such a thing could happen in her little store. A Christmas miracle indeed.
OK, so I may not be able to visit EVERY store in America, so I'm gunna' delegate an important task to my furry pals out there:
Go shopping and BE NICE TO THE FOLKS WHO WORK IN THE STORE.
It's easy. Wish them a wonderful holiday. Be gentle with their frazzled brains. Tell 'em a good dirty joke. Hand out cookies if you have to but do something to make these people happy.
Don't forget, without them you wouldn't have that new shirt to spill eggnog on.

Amen to that!
I myself used to work in the foodservice industry... while that's certainly not the sort of job where you experience the same kind of stuff as the customer service guys at retail stores, I've taken my share of crap from customers and I myself have vowed to be nice to all people who work those jobs that involve dealing with many, many, many people from day to day. These guys are no exception.
I take your words of wisdom to heart, Dogbomb. -hugs-
Have yourself a Merry little Christmas, man. You of all people certainly deserve one. ^^

A-FUCKING-MEN. (Pardon my French.)
Working in a retail store, I cannot TELL YOU how much this would brighten up my day around this time of the year.
I don't think people realize when they're in crappy moods, they put us down. We work customer service to make all of you guys and girls happy! Some things are just out of our power.
Thanks for this, Dogbomb. <3 You're the best.

Ya know, even though I know it's not possible for you to visit every store, just this thought you're putting out for others to treat the poor, berated, overworked salespeople (of which I am one) with a bit of cheer has made me smile. I doubt anyone would come into a major retail store wearing a fursuit, but if they did and wandered into my department, I would totally welcome them. Might even hug 'em if they seemed inclined.
Dogbomb, you have - again - brightened my spirits! Merry Christmas! :3

It's very true. I've worked several retail jobs over the holidays and it's full of people stressed out beyond belief, both in front of and behind the register. You really are such an awesome person for remembering all sorts of individuals in all of your pictures and stories. Kudos to you for doing so and inspiring others. :)
I really would like to use my Stella character of what you do, when I do get a fursuit of her that is. Even
nyappy puts on his fursuit and helped shelter adopt a lot of animals. It's lot better than going to weird furry conventions.

I'm amazed that the people working retail can even stay sane, much less have some good humor this time of year.... I deliver to retail grocery stores (yes, I'm with the semi-truck taking up 10 parking spaces). It's really appalling to see how down right ugly and rude some of their customers can be to my friends working at these stores. Dogbomb, I'm with you 100%, spread the Christmas cheer!
Heh... did this last night, in fact. I was buying a present for my parents at a national retail store (The Bay, for all Canucks out there) - 2 pasta bowls. Easy enough to find, thankfully.
I get to the cash - they didn't scan. And keying in the number didn't work either. I waited patiently with a smile while the cashier actually walked over to the dishes section to find the price. She was gone about 5 minutes - I stayed there, not moving or getting upset. Finally, she came back - they were a little more expensive than I'd hoped, but nothing serious, so again no meltdown. Finally, I asked to have them put in a box - which she couldn't find a lid for.
It probably took about 10 minutes to cash out, but I never got upset at her, and even joked about how things were going wacky. :) I'm sure she was glad I wasn't the other type of customer that night. ^^

I applaud your patience. Most people who shop at stores that are disrespectful or rude have never worked a day in retail to know how annoying and frustrating it is. If only everyone was forced to work at least one week in retail while us "regulars" had off, then our jobs would be less stressful...
Agreed. While I've never worked retail, per se, I have been a part of the customer service industry at work for almost 10 years now at all levels. I've seen and heard how customers can be; it's given me lots of patience for people who have to do that job - after all, it's not the clerk's fault that someone didn't scan things properly. Better to laugh at the situation than to get angry and make it worse.
I have done the Christmas retail thing (grocery to be precise). Its amazing how much a little calm and humor can do to help people stay sane during holiday shopping.
My fiance is working retail right now, I think he would appreciate more people following your advise about being rational during the holidays. Most of the people who come into the store he works at are a bit loony.

retail slave here too, I sooo wish someone would show up in fursuit to my store but I'd be afriad the snooty manager and scaredy cat employees would throw them out! in my store holidays are known as Hell-idays for a reason due to our 'sweet' customers who love throwing things, breaking things, kicking, spitting and hitting (and these are little old ladies in a womens clothing store!!!)
Agreed! I worked at Wal-Mart for three years. I believe it should be mandatory for everyone to work in some sort of customer service job for a year so that they will understand what it's like, and then maybe not be so snotty--all the time, not just at Christmas.
But lol, you know that Frankincense and Myrrh were perfumes used by the ancient Egyptians?

Very true, and very good advice! I work at Food city in Tennessee, and it is pretty crazy during the Holidays! (Superbowl Sunday is worse then Christmas out here! gah! it was also my first day. . . .)
I hope you have fun cheering up many people during this holiday season!
(You don't happen to plan to visit Tennessee do you? hehe.)

That will do it! lol. Well, if you show up at my food city, I should be working on thursday (If you mean the 23rd) and will likely be working 4:30-9:30, at a big food city store at 1205 Northeastman Rd.
If you do manage to get here, I will be sure to try and catch you! (don't leave until I do! hehe!) Awesome thing you are doing, hopefully I will have a camera by the time you get here (my sister stole mine. . . it was an awesome camera. 12.2 MP. . .)!

This made my day.
I work in a Wal-Mart in Port Huron, Michigan. It gets pretty hectic, since despite the fact that Port Huron is a rather small town, we get traffic from all over the thumb area and from Canada, since it's the town where I-94 ends, M-25 starts, and it's also where one of the most-traveled bridges to Canada is located.
It's been a tough winter for everyone so far. We actually had one of our cashiers crying because a customer was so rude to her. I'm sure that you know what it takes to be a cashier, and I'm also sure that you know it takes a whole lot of effort to bring a cashier to tears.
It's been a tough season for everyone.
We all do our part to try to cheer each other up around this time of year. Today I must have swapped at least twenty recipes for holiday candies and sweets with customers just at my register, gave at least twelve hugs, and even got a number from a customer who makes and sells fudge from home. Some money for him is a nice present for a chocolate lover.
This picture, and the description, just made me smile.
Thanks for caring, Dog <3.

I wish my partial was umm how you say not so intimidating. ^^; Maybe I just need more festive attire? I went out one time in the summer and got more strange looks then anything. But I suppose the people around here aren't used to seeing a dragon anthro walking around. I may see about hanging out with people that collect for Salvation Army outside the stores. ^^ Then I have reason to not really have areas showing that would be bare skin as I am waiting for some one to do my gloves. It would be easy for me to make a tail too. Thanks Dogbomb for giving me more courage to go out! Love you, you big cuddly dog! -hugs-
You're awesome dogbomb, I wish you'd come to a store near me XD
I actually manage to keep pretty levelheaded with retail workers throughout the year, even on the offhand occasions I make them scurry about because one of them messed up something rather critically. They are human, and deserve to be treated as such. Everyone should have to work at least one fast food job and one retail job in their lives, just so they know what it's like. I'm just glad you're giving a good holiday PSA... it's amazing all that stuff you do ^^

*waggwagg* I have a video of me wondering around the local mall in suit shortly before FF. I should post it on youtube. haha. We then tested our luck and I flopped around Walmart. The other shoppers and workers loved it! Thanks for being such an outstanding member of our community DB! ...and thanks for just being cool! *hugs*
