This extremely-oversized shep was a soldier. WAS. A very few quadrupeds in this setting are sapient and can use their forepaws as hands. Renard was in two consecutive and related fictional wars over a span of several years, and was taken out with multiple brutal injuries, attempting to continue fighting past a few of them. The worst and last took place after the 2nd war ended, and his spine and one foreleg were shattered. A bio-prosthetics company rebuilt him extensively, replacing his foreleg and one eye, installing a new spine, and replacing his jaw, teeth and several organs. His scars and ear holes from bullets stayed put. He was forcefully retired.
He's now a police officer. He keeps his electronic eye set to the default pre-replacement blind appearance.
