Fortunately, she's pretty difficult to sneak up on... aside from having really good hearing and smell, there are all sorts of ways that 'tactile telekinesis' can be used sort of like radar to feel things moving towards her.

Hmm, good question... probably not as such, no, if she wouldn't be able to touch them, she wouldn't notice them coming that way.

Granted, in her world background there aren't actually any completely non-corporeal beings that we've run into yet.

I mean, in one of the previous stories, she ran into a vampire... and the reason that vampires don't show up in mirrors is that a vampire in this world is basically a cloud of mosquitoes with a mental illusion and a hive mind over top of it.

Mercedes' friend Marie would probably have preferred something actually incorporeal.

Tbh... a cloud of mosquitoes with a hive mind is way scarier than just one single vampire. *shudder*

I mean, the entire concept of the story world she's from was for me as a writer to figure out ways to make things like 'people with the Sight can see the true forms' and 'mirrors show their true forms' actually work out consistently with shapeshifters... so basically all shapeshifters are actually insects/foxes/whatever and simply project an illusion into your mind to make you think they look human. But that only works if you're looking directly at them, and people with 'the Sight' are basically people immune to the illusions.

And as Marie has noted, one of the problems with being immune to the illusions is that you have no idea what everybody else is seeing anymore...
