Extinguished Yet Alive (Spooktober commission )
GATE GATE PARAGATE PARASAMGATE BODHI SVAHA- Mantra of the Heart Sutra
Sokushinbutsu, an Ascetic practice of alleged self-mummification for the benefit of all sentient beings. Apparently completed through the process of “consuming a tree”, in which the ultimate alternative diet of only pine nuts, needles, resin and lacquer tea slims the practitioner hollow. It’s finished up with a bell attached to let attendants know if the ascetic is still alive or not. Though alternative lines of research suggest preservation of the body was done after naturally passing on. These preserved awakened ones are entombed as exemplars and examples of enlightened ones, also showing up in popular eastern role playing franchises.
I went and got my sona drawn in this style for spooktober by the pleasant corgi

I came across this piece on Vigoratus' gallery last night. I ended up having a very vivid dream where I was conversing with a monk about the concept of self-sacrifice as he underwent sokushinbutsu.
I don't think a piece of art ever had such a strong and immediate effect on me before. So, thank you (and Vigoratus) for a very evocative piece.
