"How's my Foxy Flowerpot feeling?" Asked Oliver over his radio as he returned. His normally organic looking cybernetic body had the skin removed from his hands and forearms to give improved fine dexterity. The external skin panels on his upper arms were in the extended position, giving him a greater range of motion.
"Just the normal wonkiness you get from having new parts installed." Rain said dryly through her own radio. "All the diagnostics on the new VI (Virtual Intelligence) processor look good. Not looking forward to the acclimatization of course."
"Yea, I can tell you're not feeling good. Just a part of life with a metal body though.", said Oliver, resting his large metal hand on top of the clean room as he switched his visual feed from his eyes to the diagnostic readouts from Rain's body.
"I do appreciate your bedside manner," mused Rain, trying to be positive.
"All part of being a doctor and a friend," said Oliver. Content that the new processor was working properly, Oliver switched his visual feed back to his eyes. "You can shut down the diagnostics now."
Oliver could see the moment the diagnostics software stopped just from the look on her face. "Oh that feels so much better," said Rain in relief. "Running a new VI processor like that is just awful."
"You do a good job though", said Oliver. Doing what he could to keep Rain upbeat. "You don't cut corners and let the diagnostics do its thing."
"Well as much as these top-end VI processors cost, I'm not about to risk one because I cut corners having it installed," Rain answered.
"That's a good attitude to have", said Oliver.
"So, I need to stay in Nitrogen for 2 days once I'm all put back together?" asked Rain, changing the subject
"Yup, the normal 2 days in an oxygen-free environment for everything to set" answered Oliver, seeing that she wanted to talk about something else. "My VIs should be back shortly with the parts of you they took to work on. Any plans for that time?"
Rain said, "I'm just gonna have you power me off and put me in my shipping case..."
"Wierdo." Oliver interrupted with a large grin on his face.
"We used to do stuff like that all the time back when I was a Probe Jocky", laughed Rain in reply. "Got a 3 week coast after a jump and course correction burn? Setup your sensors to log what's going on, set a wakeup timer, and shut yourself off."
"But your pet Vixabies will miss you", teased Oliver, giving her his best Bambi-eyed look.
"Oh my babies are off at a Vixie resort while I'm having this done", said Rain. "My VIs have already sent me plenty of photos of them having fun."
"Well good to hear that you've got this planned out," said Oliver.
"Oh it gets better", said Rain, getting excited despite not feeling well, "The weather is looking like it will be cold and rainy by the time we all get back home. They'll be exhausted and I'll be feeling like crap while I acclimatize to these new parts. It's going to be sooooo cozy out on the covered patio with all of them snuggled up around me."
"You've shown me plenty of photos of them doing that", mused Oliver. "It does look super comfortable, your vase buried in a pile of fluff with only your head poking out."
"My babies love to snuggle", beamed Rain.
As she was saying this, the door to the workshop opened and several of Oliver's VI workers walked into the room with the parts of Rain's body that had needed work.
"Looks like it's time to get you back together and off to your Vixies," said Oliver, seeing the procession of parts being brought to him. With that, he moved over to the side of the clean room, plugging a power cord into his robot body. The VIs handed him the parts to inspect before placing them into the clean room via the airlock.
Satisfied of the work, Oliver inserting his hands into the clean room gloves. They stretched against his metal fingers, fitting as tightly as skin would. Reaching over, he pulled Rain gently over to the work area. The two continued chatting as Oliver reassembled her body.
