The Hanged Man - the 12th arcane, symbolizes the internal crisis and the willingness to make a sacrifice (or the need for one), which perfectly describes the character's leitmotif. Nathaniel (for the foreseeable period of history and most of AU's) is going through a deep crisis of faith, an identity crisis, a crisis of hell-knows-what-else and an unhealthy desire to sacrifice himself in the name of the Greater Goal. The problem is that his Great Goal for testing turns out to be not so great, and his Mistress, to whom he swore allegiance, moves further and further from their shared ideals on her path of insanity and pride.
