OH GOD THIS MOVIE IS LIKE ECSTASY FOR THE EYES!!
The story sucks but OMG the COLORS. Not to mention the killer soundtrack by one of my favorite bands, Daft Punk. And cameo in the movie too. So does Albino Jack Sparrow (no, srsly).
I popped the soundtrack on my computer and just speedpainted this whole thing in like 3-4 hours in Photoshop. It's not a perfect recreation of the costumes from Tron: Legacy. I added a bit more Tron original aesthetic in there. Also Bit, because Bit was just a great character and I sorely missed its presence in the sequel.
So here's a little fanart for this drop dead gorgeous film while reimagining the film's original villain, Master Control.
omg the glowies!!

I really like your redesign of the MCP. Of course, in this movie, Clu WAS, for all intents and purposes, the MCP: unkillable by any normal means and freakishly powerful when he chose to show it. He just was mobile.
But the 'spirit' of the MCP was there. This pic's a beautiful illustration of that.

Well, he was pretty much following his programming, which was put into place by a snotnosed young CEO, even if he was an IDEALISTIC snotnosed young CEO. Rather like HAL, he got caught into the dissonance and went nutters.
(Of course, his choice to fill the Sark role was what really cemented it, and I WON'T spoil that in the comments).

True, but the story direction was just so...vague on that. "And then he became evil" is basically what happened and it's like "why? where's his inner conflict? what was so bad about the ISOs? How did he define perfect? How is this city perfect? " Just a lot of characterization was kinda thrown aside for him and other characters in order to fit the movie into a certain timeframe. Cool ideas, awkward execution. Would've liked more reference to the current tech climate we find ourselves in today. Imagine things like social networks and wireless interfaces playing a part in the sequel. Things that simply didn't exist during the original's inception. The original played with the computering concepts of its time, but this new one kinda dropped the ball in favor of some stock fantastic racism. Don't get me wrong, I think there's some gold there, but I really felt like the story could've been truly epic if they'd spent a little bit more money hiring a better writer and less on de-aging effects.
No argument about the better writer. They DID try and bring the Pixar writing team in to tweak the script. It wasn't nearly enough. They needed Lasseter's boys to just do the whole damn thing from scratch, but too much if it had been filmed/rendered by then to do it.
As for Clu and his definition of 'perfect', it pretty much was 'what *I* can easily control.' Just as a CEO would, even the best-intentioned one. The ISOs were sentient beings, outside of easy control, so he squashed them like bugs.
And the Grid was kept OFF the Internet quite deliberately. That was mentioned, and it was a really good idea in hindsight, natch...what if Clu just connected the Grid to the *outside* world? It'd have spread like metastatic cancer, and once it hit our military computer systems, well, oops.
All that being said, I agree: enormous amounts of characterization were glossed over. Making Quorra into nothing more then a living MacGuffin was a HUGE amount of story just chucked out the airlock. I like eye candy and fanservice as much as the next moviegoer, but if the ENTIRE MOVIE is just a whole series of fanservices holding hands...that's just patronizing.

Quorra was a missed opportunity.
I actually hope it does well enough to warrant a sequel because the underlying ideas are solid enough that you could still write more on everything without destroying the established continuity. And I'm positive the Pixar writers would be all over that shit; they're all major geeks there and Lassetter himself adores Tron. Watching it as is, I get the feeling that a LOT was simply taken out for time. Entire subplots are just dropped in favor of getting to the end faster. Castern especially. They need more of that guy. And I can't believe a guy that well established would just up and *spoiler don't follow if you don't want it
*got blown up. What a bitch way to die for the only REALLY likeable character in the whole film. Quorra I felt could've been more likeable simply cause the actress had a lot of charisma and did a lot with the little she was given. She just wasn't given enough. Thank god they didn't go for the cheap copout romantic ending though. I would've left that film pissed off if they did the obligatory kiss.

Yes, Castor's story (and why he also went nutters) was completely glossed over. So was Clu and pretty much everyone else.
The story would have almost been better to have been told anime-style. Just chuck the audience in the middle of the universe and let the characters do all the heavy lifting from there.
As for sequel, it may well. It made almost $50 million domestically in it's first weekend, a number approaching Avatar's take. While it'll never make what Avatar made, if it makes it to $300 million overall, I think a sequel is inevitable.

I have a feeling it might do better internationally. And unlike Avatar, I'm inclined to get this on DVD when it comes out. The 3D was amazing and the best used 3D since Avatar and HTTYD (using the 3D to illustrate the difference between the real world and digital world was great) but I could still watch this film in 2D and enjoy it just as much. Avatar, much less so.
Gem or whatever her name was's ass was better in 3D, and so were a lot of things BUT 2D isnt bad at all.
Anyways, the story and plot and characters could have used more yes. I wanted to have more of the ISOs and castor and Tron/eviltron backstories in there.. less Zen, less fancy fights, more characters ya know?? Sure its all nice, but heck we dont mind long movies.. srsly.
Oh well ;_;
I did feel the end could have used much more too ._. sigh, was very disappoint in that. But hey..maybe its actually made to open for a sequel? -crosses fingers- >.> like how he copied the tron world onto that thingy around his neck <.<

Flynn kept what looked like dead Bits around. I wanted the thing to wake up and kick the living shit out of Clu's men somehow. They needn't change its look even. Chromify it maybe, but otherwise Bit is perfect.
Castor was Jack Sparrow guy. He just...went nutso and started RANDOMLY SHOOTING THINGS and playing air guitar on his cane. Why? BECAUSE FUCK YEAH.

SPOILER
Jarvis's defect at the end was the only thing that pissed me off. It was like, "we can't be bothered to put a fight scene here. Let's make this reeeeeeeally easy for Flynn."
Otherwise, I found myself severely geeked over this movie. Plot-wise, no, it doesn't stand up among the best. But it had enough sentimental cameos, that I found myself not really caring all to hard. Nah, there were no activated Bits, but at least they got their shoutout, if only on a mantle.
Oh, and father was miffed that they didn't push the 3D aspect anywhere near as much as they could have.
Me, I'm tired of the 3D gimick already.

Uhm, because it's fantastically adorable and brutally honest? <3
I admit though, I DID jump in my seat when they sent that one grapplehook flying directly at us
Also, my own personal geekout. I should be ashamed for placing this here.

You sure did well on this.
And the new Tron movie isn't getting very much fanart "done well", so, I commend you.
My problem with doing fanart - and this was especially true of deviantArt - is that it tends to be the only thing in my gallery to get recognition. For that reason, I end up getting angry and taking it down after so long.

That's true; much like porn here, fanart is the quickest way to get recognized on dA. I've been cultivating an online presence for years that's built around original artwork. Honestly though, I probably wouldn't be as well known if not for my BBA work. I've realized what it's like without that because here, BBA is less recognized and so I don't have that boost up.
I agree, I missed Bit as well! Though it was paid homage as those little sculptures in Flynn's hideout.
And yeah the story was pretty lame. I had trouble visualizing how the evil army of doom would look coming out of the video arcade basement to CONQUER THE WORLD. The music WAS fab, though.

Man, this looks AWESOME.
And while I did enjoy the movie, I did feel that the plot was seriously lacking. Plus I hated Sam. Like, a lot. but still the graphics (with the exception of CGJeff Bridges) and music were awesome. I would definitely go see it again in 3D (I've only seen it in 2D)
And it was great hearing Jeff inject some Dude-isms into the movie <3333
