Not sure "happy" is the right descriptor for Veterans Day (or Remembrance days as we call it here in Canada.) It's not meant to be a "happy" occasion. It's about showing respect and honoring those who fought for our way of life. That's why we Canadians typically say "Lest We Forget" instead.
My husband is a Veteran himself and he doesn’t mind it. It’s a kind gesture to those who served and respect for the original intention of the closure to the first Great War to those coming home and onward. Hubs also prefers the “lest we forget” honor and remembrance for Memorial Day where we honor those who sacrificed everything for their country. He differentiates the two with the saying “All gave some. Some gave all.”
I see. I guess it's treated very differently here in Canada than it is in the U.S. Here "Veterans Day" and "Memorial Day" are merged into one; Remembrance Day. In school every year we even had a big "military funeral"-like event in the gym that took half the day and had bagpipers and a projector that showed wartime footage and pictures of the holocaust and everything, and to not attend or not be completely silent during those 3 to 4 hours during said event was considered extremely disrespectful.
Maybe it's because we here up North don't glorify war. We don't view it as a "victory," but just a tragic waste of life that war happens at all. "Lest We Forget" is also accompanied by "Never Again." Basically the whole thing was about teaching us that there is no glory or winners in war, just suffering. Canada is a land of peace after all.
