It was going to be a lonely Christmas this year. Everything went wrong.
My friends had left to celebrate Christmas with their families last week, and thanks to a sudden snow storm, the airport and even roads are completely shut down.
Stuck at home, I couldn't leave to see my OWN family. I finally relegated myself to the fact I'd have a very lonely Christmas this year.
Until the buzzer rang.
Who would be visiting my apartment in this weather? During this season when everyone is with their loved ones?
Upon answering, the voice on the speaker immediately made my ears perk in surprise; Melon!
Due to difficulties of last-day gift shopping, she wasn't able to leave town to visit family until today, but all the snow grounded every flight out of Chicago, including hers. Making matters worse, she left the keys to her apartment at work, and her boss had already left town on a train. She had nowhere else to go.
I instantly let her in. A sweet girl like her didn't deserve to spend the night in a cold car, especially on Christmas Eve.
As I waited for her to come up to my floor, the circumstances finally came to me. We'd be spending Christmas Eve together.
Moments later, she appeared at my door, bundled up for warmth. I let her in and she immediately hugged me in gratitude for being the only one still in town. I smiled in gratitude of my own, realizing that the awful situation keeping us from visiting family allowed us to visit each other.
We'd always had feelings for one another, but were both too shy to admit it. As we sat down on the couch and chatted through the night, I don't think we needed to tell each other how we felt. It was evident in our own eyes, in how we felt around the other. We truly were in love.
That Christmas Eve, our comfort together was the best gift either of us had received that year.
A lonely Christmas indeed...
Merry Christmas, everyone. Here's hoping you get to spend it with your loved ones, as well.
