Reindeer (caribou in North America) are the only deer species in which both males and females grow antlers. Unless they've been gelded, mature males shed theirs by the end of fall. Young males and gelded males keep theirs until early winter, but pregnant females don't lose theirs until late winter/early spring so as to have an edge when competing for food.
