so i'm still sus, a common move in stories where someone is... "not from around here" or lieing is to let others make assumptions about you. when fooling others it's a perfect move to let them do the fooling to themselfs.

FFX - Rikku near the start of the game (chapter 2-3) assumes Tedus got close to Sin, absorbed some of the toxin and now has fake memories, Tedus rides that for 2/3s of the game whenever he offends someone.

Disk World - Moist von lipwig - everyone assumes he's the new post master and the right man for the job... he is... but he's a conman.

star wars - obi wan - the whole Vader lie... ("from a certain point of view")
