Well, Dagon WAS a 'real' deity - an Assyrian god of fertility and prosperity. Very popular, by all accounts. It's his temple that was toppled by Samson in the biblical story. Useless fact: not actually a fish god at all, his name was just similar to a Hebrew word 'dag' meaning 'fish'.
