For Christmas I asked my dad for a 10-round magazine for my Ruger Mini-14 Rifle. This is what he got me: a modern remake Pedersoli .45/70 rifle. Single shot, rolling block-action, 26" barrel, brass trigger guard and butt plate..... HOLY CRAP!!! Yeah, it was sort-of a redneck Christmas at my house this year. Oh--my dad got a matching one for himself as well.
It's the Red Rider BB Rifle thing all over again.
I still need that 10-round magazine though

Btw, that just may be the awesomest photo EVER. Dude in socks in front of Christmas tree with Warner Bros. cartoon sweater and gun?
There are so many stories begging to be told by that image.

The Remmington Rolling Block was a fantastic single shot rifle. Very strong, very easy to use, very accurate. (Remmington recently started making them again, BTW) The Pendersoli is one of the better quality reproductions of thise old war horse. (Actually, Pendersoli makes good guns in general, but that's differnet topic) http://www.davide-pedersoli.com/ if you wanna see a good look at what they do. They have an excellent reputaion amongst Cowboy Action Shooters in general, of which I am one, and you can't go wrong.
An excellent gift there, Andy. Congratulations, and may it serve you well. I word of caution. There are basically 3 kinds of .45-70 ammo.
1. Trapdoor loads
2. Lever Action loads
3. Super powerful loads
The Rolling Block action is not super strong. Make sure your run type one loads through it. For commercial loads, basically look for something with a 405 grain flat point bullet, or "Cowboy" loads. These are loaded to pressures that are safe in any rifle chambered for this caliber. The hotter loads can blow the gun, and the shooter, apart.
To be safe, roll your own. .45-70 is a VERY easy round to handload. Much cheaper that way too. .45-70 ammo is rather expensive.
