I love the idea of a plague making a huge impact on a species's culture, and the rods are a novel way to visually express the intricate ways that such a traumatizing event would shape their society. It's conveyed in quite a straightforward manner that leaves a lot to the imagination, which is perfect!
Ouch, having the combo of being highly repressed and instinctively venerating the Krakun can't make their lives easier. Simpler maybe, but not easier. At least they're one of the more autonomous species under Krakun control, but still...

I remember trying to visualise these guys whilst reading (well, listening to seeing as it was in audiobook format) The Captain's Oath and, whilst I was close in my approximations they aren't quite as large as I thought :) I mean, they're bloody huge compared to a Jeroo but my minds eye had them larger :D
