Hmmmm, how about if you beat Death at chess you receive one "life span" (72 years). You can use it to extend your own life, or you can give it to a person of your choice. But if you lose ... well then Death takes your life.

Speaking of Bergman, I recently had the chance to watch several of his films from the 1960s: I found them more disturbing and frightening than most of the horror films I've seen. And even though nobody else seems to like THE SERPENT'S EGG, that film terrified me in a way that was not even remotely enjoyable.
