Jenny’s notebooks were frayed and littered with crumbs and grease stains, as befitting anyone who should plan a campaign around suchly a newly formed and voracious appetite, but scattered between the pages of her notes on towns and quests were pictures of some of her creations. Foremost among them, the Skull Slime Queen was the glittering jewel in her collection. She drew her often and in various sizes and poses, but ever with that big gelatinous stomach and massive gate crashing hips.
Not fancying herself an artist by any particular means, Jenny took meticulous care nonetheless in keeping these specific pages clean of crumbs and grease. At least, as much as she could - after all, accidents happened. Scrawled down the side of the pages in sloppy cursive were her notes on the antagonist. Whole paragraphs were crossed out with lines with smaller paragraphs jammed in beneath them, while other parts of the Skull Slime Queen it seemed, were destined never to be changed.
Standing over fifteen feet tall the Skull Slime Queen is a formidable foe to anyone who should cross her path! If sheer size and mass alone weren’t fearsome enough, this particular slime creature has enough acid in her stomach to dissolve an ill prepared party with a single breath attack! Wide enough to obliterate doors yet soft enough not to have to, this creature can be a pain to track as her feet can take the shape of any creature she so chooses, if she decides to utilize feet at all. But once found there is little chance of having to track her twice. The Skull Slime Queen seems to take from her draconic form the desire to create a horde and once settled will be loath to move.
Her slime composition gives her powerful physical armour and though she has a weakness to magic it is slight enough not to be a deterrent, nor something she cannot plan for given time and resources. Given the opportunity she will layer her lair with protective spells and wards that will enhance her resistance to the wiles of mages alongside physical traps to kill even the most wary of spelunkers.
The chance to fight her one on one however would be a rare occurrence - one of the Queen’s key abilities is to create more skull slimes from the bodies of fallen adversaries. It is in this manner that she stocks her dungeon full of slime guards, as well as how she is able to extend her reach into neighbouring territories.
But it wasn’t always like this, no. The Skull Slime Queen wasn’t always a queen, or even a Skull Slime. She was once a lowly familiar, summoned out of grape jelly by a low level mage to help with work around the study. She learned, alongside the mage, and they shared in the highs and lows of magical education. They laughed together and cried together. Many years would pass until one day she would be betrayed. She would end up alone, discarded and unwanted, a useless nothing familiar made of grape jelly. It was that day, that she vowed that she would become more. But as is the way of things, hate is too strong an emotion to be allowed to dominate one’s life. And as the years went by, hate was all that she felt. It clouded her judgement when it came to her fellow beings and it herded her further and further into isolation and darkness, until isolation and darkness was all she knew.
In my campaign I suppose the party has multiple routes of dealing with this problem: The Queen has been subjugating local areas and turning people into slimes, but is she beyond redemption? Or is it my personal desire to see more of her getting in the way? I suppose some powerful charisma rolls might help her onto a better path. I guess we’ll have to see.
