Have you seen The Witch from Mercury? It's pretty much a mash-up of Mobile Suit Gundam and Revolutionary Girl Utena.

I haven't, but it looks quite intriguing. Is any prior Gundam knowledge important? Or can I dive in?

Gundam is more a mythos than a continuity; with a few exceptions most of the Gundam series are pretty independent of each other. They just all tend to have the same basic theme: giant robots, a small subset of which have near-magical capabilities, and a state of either war or cold war between Earth and the space colonies.

So I'd say you can just dive in. Any real background is explained in the prologue episode.
