::smiles:: Tons. One example would be our Turbografx 16 system. I originally got one back in 90 or so, but made the huge mistake of selling it off. Some of the games I sold to my mother's partner, so he could have them for his TG16 that his kids played when they came up during the summer. Fast forward to 1999, and I realize that he probably has the system and games, controllers, etc, all just boxed up somewhere collecting dust. So I ask him if I can buy it all off of him. Tell him I'm willing to give him $40 for all of it. He goes "Really? I would have let it all go for $20... ::Facepaws:: WHY WOULD HE TELL ME THAT?!!! Anyway, I snagged the system, 6 games, and 5 controllers with the multitap for $40, including 2 games that were originally mine in the first place. An insane haul, especially now...
No problem! I've plenty of other tales. For instance, in the early 2000s, I was haunting video rental stores, because those places usually sold off their old stock rather cheap. They rarely held onto anything that was more than 1 generation back. The release of the PS2, xbox, and Gamecube triggered many a store to sell off their 16 bit rental stock. I made a point of ingratiating myself with the managers, so I could know precisely when to come by. Built out a good bit of my Sega Genesis collection that way.
That's very true. I picked up alot of my Turbografx 16 library around that time. That was back before PayPal let alone the retro gaming craze and speculators made the prices go all crazy high. Alot of those old games could be had on Ebay pretty cheaply. Picked up my copy of Splatterhouse for about $15. There were a few games that were relatively expensive. Snatcher for the Sega CD was around $50. And Panzer Dragoon Saga was always crazy expensive. But most stuff could be gotten for very reasonable prices. You just had to be patient. Back then you had to send a money order, wait a week for that to get to them, and then another week for the game to get shipped back to you. But if you didn't mind that, you could get some real deals...
