Junio Sonic doin an SA1 Pose
There’s gonna be a lot of these posted in the next 10 minutes, so be prepared
Context on the origins of this style:
In 1992-93, Sonic CD was being made, right along side Sonic 2. While Sonic Team went to the US to work on Sonic 2 with SEGA’s American Division, SEGA’s Japan Division was tasked to creating a Sonic game for the recently announced Sega CD. The SEGA CD was capable of playing CD quality music along side a video game, hence its name. But, it could also play FMVs (Full Motion Videos) too! So they asked Studio Junio and Toei Animation, most known for creating Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z at the time, to create animations for the opening and ending cutscenes in the game. Hisachi Eguchi, who is known for helping make many anime’s that were popular at the time, was then told to make designs for Sonic that were going to be used in their animations. And with as little as 4 months to make them, the animations were completed on time! And the result is amazing!
Now, for the reason for the designs name:
While most people on the internet named the design “Toei Sonic”, Eguchi himself has corrected that the real name should be “Junio Sonic”. The reason is that Studio Junio were responsible for actually making the animations, and Toei Animation only produced them.
