Ancient Egyptian Jackal God.
Predynastic, in fact.
from Before Anubis or Wepwawet.
probably not as old as Imiut, but getting there.
From the phase when the egyptian jackal god wasn't named and was basically the canine equivalent of Valkyries.
worth noting mesoamerica also did that, since native indians just have their own independent lore about dogs helping people in the afterlife.
supposedly there's an inuit ritual where you murder a dog so it becomes a ghost and helps people in the afterlife, but I got that info from a residents album so I'm not sure it's that specific or if they just ritually killed dogs because they felt like it.
'Inuit' is also a broad term for a lot of different tribes and some don't do that so yeah.
But either way the aztec version was Xolotl. and his story is slightly different from Anubis.
In that he's basically Anubis but also "The ugly barnacle" from spongebob.
And also they named Axolotls after him, their names actually mean "Water Xolotl".
in fact he's considered the patron of anything that has xolotl in it's name in nahuatl.
