as a result of continuously defaulting to spyro content when I have nothing better to do I found out that the spyro wiki had every concept art of spyro.
which amounts to like 117 drawings.
Meaning they had to redesign spyro like 117 times before they were satisfied with his design.
Many of the designs are similar so I just did the ones that stood out most, because I felt like each of them is a type of Spyro.
Also Spyro was originally meant to be named "Pete" until they found out disney already had a dragon with that name.
So they wanted to change his name to "Pyro" but they realized that'd be overly edgy for a kid's game.
This relates to how early on Spyro was meant to be made in a serious vein modelled after the film "Dragonheart."
But then they decided to make it more upbeat, and the result was that early on it had much more 90s edge since that's the result of having a design scheme halfway between "dark" and "light" as it were.
A good example of this being how one of the games has an unused enemy they reference in a bit in the game, and the enemy is in a book called "Faunus Mortas" - or dead animals - the joke with that book is every single one ends with the latin nominative suffix "-us", like 'Catabatus' which is just "Catbat + -us".
So consider that joke, then consider that the unused enemy is named "Mister Fistus" and you get what the joke was.
And his thing is he has a giant stone fist btw.
a lot of this rewriting was done in relation to how poorly the previous Insomniac Studio game did, named "Disruptor."
Which was basically a PS1 starship trooper game with Psykers fighting aliens and FMV cutscenes that have the quality of gay porn films.
meaning In an alternate timeline where that game did well, Spyro was made as a dark and serious dragon game in the 90s.
which I picture as just being the Soul Reaver games but with a dragon.
But yeah, I break down the proto-spyros into 3 groups:
all the goofy looking designs which I call "Petes",
all the edgy looking ones I call "Pyros",
and all the ones that look more evil or adult I call "Dracos."
either way my favorite one was this one:

(that link died, literally as I posted it, which means that the site responded to the usage of it on my end most likely.)
So here's a tweet of a capture I did of it so you can see what I mean anyway:

apart from a few details it's literally just Kolt.
it also confirms what I keep saying about how Spyro was originally meant to be a bit of an evil little bastard.
