I suspect it was keyed on admitting any information. If he'd said something like 'I have no idea what you're talking about', he would've been undetonated, but Doc might have killed him. But even saying 'I can't talk about it because...'? This admits you know something, which might be enough to clue someone in. And the penalty for that is the head-shattering ka-boom.
See? This is what happens when humanity stops dealing with the Fair Folk and the like on a regular basis. Everyone stops learning to carefully choose their words before talking...
