So I got Crunchy Roll awhile back to watch the "Legend of Mana" anime and new eps of MHA. I figured while i was using it I would also check out that High Guardian Spice show. I have seen plenty of videos of people reviewing it and giving their thoughts so I might as well watch it.
I'm 4 episodes in and I don't hate it but its not very good. I think the biggest issue is the writing, if feels kind of aimless making every episode feel like filler, and it dosnt explain important things very well. Like I still dont really know what a "High Guardian" is
at the end of the 2nd episode they had characters give some vows about being Guardians but it felt like empty platitudes, that didnt explain any thing. Do they serve the people, royalty, do they run shops(they got a blacksmith class) or are they just adventures?
think the first episode should have just been Rose and Sage as little kids reading stories about Guardians and what they do, then it jumps to when they are heading to school, the train they are on gets attacked they try to help but fail and full High Guardians save the day
the people that attack the train could be linked to the main villains of the series too. I think by doing that you would show and tell the audience what a Guardian is while also showing what Rose and Sage could be at end of their journey
at the school they could make it part of their studies to take quests for the people in town. It could get them out of the school setting from time to time and get them to face the main villain's forces too and learn what their plans are, moving the plot forward
I dont think of my self as a writer but this is what I came up with it and I think it could have worked. I dont think the show is terrible and I dont think it deserved as much hate as it got though. Ok im done rambling

I dont think it deserved hate for Crunchy Roll's choices, but yeah it can and should be criticized on its own merits and to some degree on the merits of the people who made it
Yes there is an anime based on The Legend of Mana, it follows the Jumi storyline for now though. They show a new episode every Friday I think

If HGS had this kind of art style, I think people would've been a little nicer to it.
Still I do agree that the writing for this was bad, not to mention the way it handled certain messages and ideals. Had all the subtlety of a sledge hammer... with stick of dynamite on the end

Personally, I think HGS had a great concept and style, but it got screwed over by the pittance of a budget that Crunchyroll gave then. If they had the budget of, say, The Legend of Vox Machina, it might have been a lauded and popular series.
Also, people naysay this series for the diversity and inclusion, but again if they had the budget to refine the script and get better VAs, it probably would have been so much better.
Crunchyroll gave these creators a raw deal, and the blame should fall on the parent corporation that screwed them, not the creators.
