Another animal, described in the previous posting, from El Dorado.
The specimen pictured here is shown with his primary eyes open and a bunch of dirt and plants and foliage less than what they'd prefer to have on and around them. The lure/tongue has secondary 'eyes' that function as light sensors, all of which can regenerate if the Naturalist Trapper should have an accident.
They prefer forests, swamps and fens - any area with a lot of groundcover and relatively soft earth that they can paddle up over themselves to camouflage, or promote plantgrowth in the pockets that occur naturally in their shells.
Naturalist Trappers are one of the few animals on El Dorado that specialize in catching predators, though any animal that brushes past or against the fine hairs of the lure on their tongue will likely get its head trapped and neck broken or wrenched right off when the jaws snap shut.

Nope - this is just the planet the character's fleet ended up having to pass by on their way home.
Sorta Voyager/SGU sorta scenario, only not so much - seeing as how they're less than 50 lightyears. Only the larger ship they're escorting is VERY slow and can't cross gulfs. Their ship, for that matter, can't either - hence having to set down on El Dorado and modify the ship, stripping cargo and other stuff and increasing jump fuel.

This is quite epic. I love this giant turtle fellow. I find it interesting how the eyes were placed on the shell, rather than a fleshy head extremity like Earth turtles.
This also reminds me fondly of the "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" monster from 1st eddition D&D. Never used them in my games, but goodness, those things were lolsy.
Looks like you took that "land angler" concept and turned it into something awesome. Good work. Waiting for more critters.
Going to compose a book called "Seriayne's Fieldguide of Unusual and Vexing Beasts"?
Would be quite epic, me thinks. I'd buy it. D: (D&D/RPG manual nerd here D: D: D: )
