Jayjack was born within the Brassbog tribe, a small settlement of lizardfolk that specialized as druids and scouts. Sometimes the denizens of the Brassbog tribe would travel outward and aid folks that found themselves lost within the woods or swamps. The tribe was slightly nomadic, moving closer to bodies of water when winter came for easier access to water compared to freezing while traveling long distances for water sources. The tribe was a somewhat peaceful tribe, tending to leave those that ran into them alone, besides aiding them in leaving if they needed it.
Jayjack had a loving mother and father that raised him up slightly, he was always around animals that seemed to take a liking to Jayjack. Just like his father Jay had a wonderful sense of direction, and just like his mother he had a knack for animals and nature as a whole. But unfortunately for Jayjack good things didn't last, at the age of 3 the tribe was attacked by a large group of undead. Jayjack and his mother escaped into the woods in order to get away from the encroaching undead horde. Jays mother took a blow defending Jayjack from some zombies, and just as things seemed grim for the two they were saved by some rangers that were in the area. They couldn't treat Jays mom on the spot, she needed the medical aid of a practiced healer, so the two were taken to the church in Versimia. Jayjack was freezing so he was wrapped up in a cloak by a half elf ranger named Sandra Arbuckle, she was a kind person that did her best to try and reasure Jayjack.
Thats where Jayjack met Erin Jakar a very kind old man in charge of the church. Erin did his best to treat Jays dying mother, but the infections were very bad, the wounds too deep. She gave Jay a final goodbye before entrusting Jayjacks safety to Erin saying some words, then passing away soon after. Jay was devastated at the loss of his mother, her final words being that she would always be with him in spirit. While Jay mourned his mothers passing the adults present did their best to comfort him, Sandra even let Jay keep her cloak while Erin offered him a place to stay, adopting the kid under his own roof.
The Brassbog tribe had a good few shamans, Jays mother being of one such kind, although he never got to learn much in terms of shamanic magics, Jay did learn druidism to some lesser degree. Because of this Jay knew that to keep ones spirit with you, one must hold onto a bone from the dead, only then would their spirit remain. It took some convincing but Jay was able to talk Erin into letting him take his mothers skull, wearing it as a reminder that he would find his tribe once more, maybe even his father Grothkar Brassbog A lizardfolk guide and hunter who may have survived. To Jays small memory his father was a large lizardfolk that towered over many but was very kind to all under his care.
As Jayjack grew up he found out if he focused hard enough he could communicate with both plants and animals, very simplistic words but it was still communication. He spent a good bit of his time wandering around the forests, befriending animals he came across, if he could he'd forage for small nuts and berries to feed any small critters he came across. From time to time he'd bump into Sandra who traveled the woods with her pet dire wolf Noctis. She would make sure he didn't get into trouble but the two would chat about small stories, Jay telling her of all the friends he met while in the woods and the various siblings he has. Albeit she did warn him to keep the animal and tree talking to a minimum, same concerns that Erin had. But both Erin and Sandra knew that Jayjack had a drive to nature, there was very little they could do to stop that pull he had.
