Originally untitled, this piece comes all the way from the Summer of '05. I've learned a lot about line breaks since then, but what the hey, this is still my favorite piece from that year. For this piece I spend an afternoon in the Rockin Java Cafe on Haight street and just absorbed the atmosphere. I wrote down descriptions of my surroundings and snatches of conversation I caught, ate a delicious salad and had my first Boca burger. Later I wrote two pieces from the material and this was the second one. There was indeed a man at his laptop in a 10 gallon hat in the middle of the cafe.
Anyway, hearing the stories from my father of what Haight was during the summer of love, the transformation it underwent into a dangerous hard drug area, and seeing how commercial it has become I was a bit disillusioned to say the least. But you can still head to the pan handle and follow it up into golden gate park where you might just catch a whiff of the spirit of the sixties.
