I had a job as a hacker once, and I don't mean computer hacker. :) It was only through a cold-water swamp, not a rain forest. I have nothing but respect for anyone who can do that for half an hour without being falling-down exhausted.
Oh, pro tip: A light-weight, thin-bladed machette actually works better than a thick heavy one or a hatchet or an axe. You can get the thing going faster which is more important than the weight of the blade in getting through vegetation faster. Also the temper of the steel is vital. It's not going to hold a good edge but good steel will hold SOME KIND of an edge at least.
Other pro tip: The usual machette sheath or holster has a slot the full length of the blade, which is wider at the tip than the root. If you hold it in one hand and draw sword-like you'll pull the thick part of the blade back and slice your fingers. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Final pro tip: Tropical blades shatter in northern winters!
