Today was an unusal day for the crew of the geordian gateship Jinja Miau. The ship's communications officer had gotten an urgent message to prepare for an unscheduled visit by Fleet Commissioner Korokastäk, who wasn't scheduled for another three days. The crew went into full "Flight of the Bumblebee meets Yakety Sax" to hide all the brazenly illegal casinos, breweries, pirate and smuggler trading posts (plus finding enough closets to shove all the pirates, smugglers, and everyone else not supposed to be on the ship into), and moving all the unauthorized ships to the opposite side of the enormous gateship, in hopes that its bulk would conceal the ships from the gate and shuttle bay when the Commissioner arrives. All things they would normally have plenty of time to plan for during the Commissioner's normal schedule of one visit every ten days.
Startide, known unofficially as the "Commissioner's pet", was also a little worried. He normally loved Commissioner Korokastäk's visits, as he always jumped at the opportunity to go into Korokastäk's mouth and take care of his dental needs, in addition to "other" needs as well, but those always occured on regularly scheduled visits, and Commissioner Korokastäk wasn't the sort to spring surprise visits on the Jinja Miau. Was the Company getting wise to the crew's shenanigans?
A very chaotic hour later, Star stood at attention in front of the gargantuan shuttle, waiting for the krakun-sized hatch to open. The ship's captain always made sure the Commissioner's favorite geordian was always at the front of the welcoming committee whenever Korokastäk came aboard, despite Star not even being an officer. Things just went smoother that way. The massive hatch opened, and a ramp slid down to the deck, however the Commissioner waited inside.
"Startide! Come inside. Your services are needed," boomed a deep, powerful voice from inside. "The rest of the bridge crew, you are all dismissed. Go back to your regular duties. I'm not here for an inspection."
Wordlessly, Star stared a moment at the officers, then ran up the ramp and onto the shuttle, sniffing the air and being quite thankful that he detected no trace of the sulfur atmosphere that krakun normally breathed. The air had been cycled during the trip up, he realized.
Facing the immense draconic quadriped lying on a luxurious cushion in the opposite side of the shuttle's interior, Korokastäk looked uneasy. In pain?
"Sir, is there something you need me to do?" asked Star curiously.
"I appear to have been a little...overly enthusiastic while biting into this afternoon's meal, a very juicy kampobeast rib rack, and managed to bite down on my dining utensils, creating a nasty chip in one of my teeth," explained Commissioner Korokastäk. "It is far more pleasant to have you in my mouth than the claws of some overly aggressive krakun dentist, and your small size will no doubt make this an easy repair. Also, there's an eight year wait for emergency tooth repair at all the dentist offices near my apartment."
With his spirits rising now that he knew that Korokastäk wasn't here to sniff out illicitry on the ship, Star explained that he needed to go fetch the proper tools and would be back very soon.
Ten minutes later, Star found himself lying across his favorite krakun's broad, powerful tongue, inspecting the chipped tooth.
"Sir, this will take about an hour for me to shape the filling perfectly and to force-set it. I'd advise you close your mouth so that your jaws don't get tired from holding it open. I have a headlamp for light in here," he said while feeling over the tooth with one paw, the other grabbing some tooth plaster from his toolbelt.
Korokastäk responded with a grumbling that sounded almost like a purr, then the light quickly faded as the great jaws closed, temporarily sealing the geordian inside that familiar, cavernous maw. Star flicked his light on and got to work, humming to himself as the trifuricated tip of the krakun's tongue curled up and rested against his back in encouragement.
