CCCXXXVIII: Woolly and Wild
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
The original plan for Phase Three had an extra chapter in between "Running Cold" and "Synthesis." It would have focused completely on Cass in the wild, and would have had absolutely no words. The idea was to tell a visual story with the perspective of being a creature alone in the wilderness, with no one to talk to and no ability to even make human speech.
As I fleshed out the various character arcs for the phase, that chapter became less and less cohesive to the storyline. It began feeling more like a gimmick that stalled the plot. So, it was at that point I finally gave up on my longstanding avoidance of internal monologues. For this new version of "Synthesis" to work, we had to get into Cass' head. To ease into having thought balloons in UTC, I introduced them three chapters ago, when Flint fought Argo, and used them occasionally ever since, so that their heavy use in this chapter wouldn't come out of left field.

Yeah I think it was the right call not making the night in the woods it's whole chapter that would have been kinda gratuitous but I would like to get a better understanding of all of the various motivations of her actions in the moment I suppose the text implies she is having a hard time staying focused but still why abandon the plan? I suspect the answer is that her care for her bother takes such priority in her mind over her own confront and she has a hard time comprehending the consequences of her actions in this reduced capacity putting more stress on everyone else. I wonder if she is motivated by sheer big sister worry or guilt over contributing to flint`s decision.
And when Cass is (hopefully) found, and returned to a more human state? Someone will take time to chew her out about 'protagonist centered thinking'. "Did you think you were the only one who would search for or could find Flint?"
I mean objectively Cass made the situation worse by forcing everyone to track two missing people, one possibly in medical distress because they don't know how her nanite purge is working out.

So ... Cass has lost a good deal of her wits, she's held onto enough of herself to remember to look for Flint, and to worry about him, and to remember that the two of them need to return home.
But how did she even know to write her own name down in the snow? That she'd forget her own name in her sleep, and reading it in the morning would bring back her sense of self?
