A magical trap is sprung by Gwae and Kathalia, transforming the adventurers into goblins!
Val's notes: I've tried my hand at drawing the Kriores, the goblinoid Korrigan of the Moors in the past, switching between a few styles for them. I decided to try a new approach to give them a bit more of their own identity, drawing inspiration from some talented artists who draw similar creatures. A special shout out to https://www.furaffinity.net/user/eduartboudewijn/ for the massive help in getting the clothing size-change effects right! After a few sketches, I decided to try and make a transformation version featuring Gwae and Kathalia instead. I hope you like this little series and feedback/comments is always appreciated!

Kathalia took the alchemical torch and peered through the broken rubble, the brightly glowing silver liquid inside the glass globe giving the smooth stone walls of the tunnel the appearance of light reflected off a pool of water. Through the hole in the wall, she could see the long corridor stretch both directions into the darkness, silent except for the loose tumble of stones from the hole she had just made. The air in the tunnel was damp and cold. Satisfied, she continued to hit the wall with the hammer, the rest of the wall falling away much faster than before.
Gwae took the torch from her, checking a scrawled bit of parchment in her hands. "I canna believe that the mine came this close to breaching one of the tunnels. I had expected a few meters, but this was only a few swings away!"
"I expect that its not a coincidence." Marie chimed in "The Roc'h Kleger Troupe were exiles, cut off from Ker-Malastred, so they didn't have the resources for proper tunneling. If they could take advantage of someone else's work, they would. There's a lot of songs about Knockers in the mines, so I'd wager that a lot of their tunnels are right up against the mine."
"Well, their corner cutting makes our lives much easier." Kathalia said, the final swing of the hammer knocking the last bit of wall down. I was skeptical when I heard that there was an abandoned Kriores treasure out here. Normally, it would be almost impossible to get."
"Aye, the Kriores are clever when it comes to defenses." Gwae didn't look up from the map "I'm sure that the main entrance, if we could even find it, is lousy with traps and dead ends."
Kathalia tossed the heavy hammer aside and stepped through the rubble into the smooth hallway, two streams of water running on both sides of the stone floor. Gwae followed, alchemical torch in hand.
"I think Morgiana is on her way back." Marie called through the opening. "We'll follow you when she gets here!"
Kathalia, followed by Gwae, made her way deeper down the tunnels, following the flow of the water, as the rooms shifted between mineshafts, dug tunnels and natural cavern before arriving in front of a large doorway carved into the stone, set inside a small antechamber.
"It's a wee bit curious," Gwae gave the door a thorough glance up and down "This troupe were basically bandits, even though they apparently made off with a fair bit of stolen treasure from both the Kriores capital and the surface settlements. Some parts of this tunnel seem quite well made."
"Its strange, but they had a lot of time on their hands." Kathalia nodded, prodding the door "I'm more interested in how many abandoned mines cut through this. They didn't do a good job of hiding their work, and there's almost no way that someone never found an entrance into the tunnels after all this time. I can't believe no one ever got their hands on the treasure."
With a click of the right stone, the door began to slide back into a recess, the water, long stored in a hidden chamber, moving the unseen mechanisms within. As the stone seal was broken, coils of green fog began to roll out of the door. Kathalia jumped back and the mist filled the antechamber.
Her head swam as she stumbled to rest her hand against the wet stone wall. Nearby, Gwae coughed as the mist began to clear.
"What was that?" Kathalia said, pushing herself off the wall, still wobbling. Her skin was burning, a sudden fever rising within her despite the cool moisture of the room.
"Feth Fiada" Gwae coughed "It tends to gather in disused places where the hud flows. All that energy got bottled up there like an Anjevin wine."
The silver-haired mage seemed a little sick from where Kathalia stood, appearing a little green in the light of the torch. Her cape seemed to hang loosely on her shoulders, her lavender hat slipping over her eyes. "Did you fall or something?" Kathalia asked, looking over her companion.
"No..." Gwae started "What in the Dagda's cauldron did ye get on yer face?"
"What are you..." Kathalia raised her hands to wipe away the droplets of moisture, only to stop and stare at the dark olive spots spreading over the back of her hand. She looked up to stare at Gwae, whose pale skin had grown a yellow-green. Her own hands had changed, one of her fingers merging into another as sharp claws grew from her nailbeds, even as she watched. The room seemed to spin and grow, her clothing becoming loose around her as the ceiling, once within reach, receded upwards.
"Are ye havin' me on?!" Gwae was changing even faster, losing almost a meter in height, her clothing looking like a child trying on her mother's oversized dress, cloth billowing around her. She reached up one of her small finger, tapping the clawed appendage against her row of sharp teeth.
We need to get out of here. Kathalia's mind raced as her body shrank and she spun, tripping over her oversized boots and crashing to the floor and falling against Gwae's pile of blue robes. She kicked away the boot, staring in shock at her tiny green hands. The water, still running in channels around the room, echoed in her ears, each stream taking on an almost musical quality as she could discern each of them.
"How are you... am I..." She sputtered "When I heard that there was some Kriores treasure, I really wasn't expecting to end up one."
"A Kriores treasure?" Gwae said absently on reflex as she looked down at her bodyguard before parsing her words, turning a bright shade of green. Both caught the other's gaze and quickly averted their eyes, Kathalia pulling up her clothing, barely staying on her tiny frame up as a deep green blush spread over her own face.
"This hud has been stuck here for donkey's years, just gathering up magical Foyson." Gwae reasoned, faster than necessary, suddenly taken by the cup and ball carving adorning the walls, even as her occasional glances betrayed her. "Its flowing with the water, but then got bottled up here. Whatever huderez was in place here has probably broken down past its intended use. It only 'knows' that it is supposed to do something to intruders and that Kriores belong here..."
"Which puts us here..." Kathalia stood up in annoyance. "Well might as well..." A cry cut her off from further up the chamber. Gwae and Kathalia looked at each other and then darted up the corridor.
