The whole dynamic is reminiscent of the Bartimaeus series - Roko at times acts much more like a djinn than a traditional kitsune. (Soul-eating was something the djinn, and every other class of spirit, happily did when given the chance, and they ate one another all the time).
Now, just like a classic djinn, he's been trapped in a container and fears leaving it because nastier things are roaming around.
Like I said, how does it feel to be on the OTHER side of the Other Place's predatory nature, Roko-san? It's not fun being in the food chain.
