Name: Josiah Williams
Location: W. Bridgewater, MA
Date: 1770
Carver: John New
This stone, badly eroded by lichen before restoration last year, turns out to have been mostly in Latin. From a transcription:
Hic in pulvere dormit stellam
matutinarn ardentissime expectans.
Hoc marmor dabit ruin am.
Sed spera christianam non abolebit vetustas.
In memory of
Mr. Josiah
Williams,
who departed
this life Oct. 27, 1770,
in ye 78 year of his age.
English translation:
"Here in the dust he sleeps,
most eagerly awaiting the morning star.
This marble will show a ruin,
but age will not destroy christian hope."
Interesting how accurately the epitaph predicted the stone's ultimate fate.~
