Wow, weird. My mom's the same way... she's not afraid of them, but she hates anything vaguely rodentlike.
But don't worry! :) A possum will never harm you. They can hiss and gape at you with their big mouths, but they don't attack. They're also one of the mammals most resistant to rabies.
