This unmistakeable hood ornament comes from a 1968 Jaguar Mark 2, and given that production of the Mark 2 supposedly stopped in 1967 at the Jaguar plant in Coventry, we can assume that the vehicle pictured is one of the youngest of its kind in existence. The Mark 2 could be split into three versions: the 2.4, 3.4, and the 3.8, the numbers referring to the size of the engine (in litres). The former two later became known as the 240 and 340. The car pictured is a 240, making it one of only about 4,500 Jaguar 240s to ever be produced. Unfortunately, this version did come with some cost-saving features: the upholstery was no longer made of real leather, and tufted carpet was used for the floor. While not necessarily impacting the car’s performance in comparison to the 2.4, they were an initial sign of Jaguar stepping back a bit from its ‘luxury’ title as a rough economy began to bite.
