Los Angeles. Christmas Eve, before nightfall.
Inside a world-famous, luxurious department store stands an eighty-foot-tall Christmas tree. On top of that tree is a glowing silvery ornament that outshines all the others around it. This twelve-pointed polygonal object is a familiar, beloved sight to the many customers busily shopping below, who are now in a last-minute rush.
This polygonal object is the Dazzling Star of Stunning Beauty.
Composed entirely of a very rare metallic alloy, it is strong, durable, and surprisingly lightweight. Despite its fame, it is extremely difficult to identify whether this massive gem is natural or man-made. Also as mysterious, its age and geological origin also cannot be determined. However, we do know that the Dazzling Star was an old gift from an unknown donor, although many people speculate that it previously belonged to the now-incarcerated Professor Marmalade. Because of its self-illuminating properties, the Dazzling Star became the ideal topping ornament for the store’s Christmas tree, displayed every December in the grand lobby. Additionally, and unbeknownst to the public, its seemingly endless supply of electrical energy can power not only the Douglas fir’s festoon of lights, but also the whole department store.
Christmas Eve, 11:50 PM
Midnight is approaching, and the recently bustling department store is now dead silent. Most of the lights are shut off as well. The premises are void of foot traffic.
But it is not void of activity.
At a ceiling opening 120 feet above the lobby, a member of the infamous Bad Guys embarks on a daring heist. Staying in the spirit of the season, Mr. Wolf is clad in a Santa suit. He then rappels downward to claim his latest prize. Thanks to careful planning and the protective cover of darkness, the gang’s suave front man successfully reaches the target without a hitch. Just as he reaches forward to grab the coveted Dazzling Star with his glove-protected hands, the wolf catches sight of something red beyond it.
Another person in a Santa suit, also suspended from the ceiling with the same type of rappelling gear. A female fox. Could it be? Wait. Is that?...
