The hours-long drive and the back molded to the shape of the car seat couldn't take all of Jo's heart out, for he had been planning that trip for a long time. With his very own ranch almost ready for the final grand opening and the stables filling up with his beloved animals, it was time to acquire his long-dreamed-of Canadian Donstrupper. Not for anyreason, as Jo was a great admirer of the breed... from afar. Ultimately, he should ideally settle down for good before going after the perfect horse, and fortunately, as the years went by, this happy goal seemed closer and closer. That afternoon it was about to be realized if all went as expected, and oooh he was surely hoping it would. His criteria for acquiring a horse were quite simple: if the connection was noticeable first-hand, if he saw something of great potential in an unpromising animal, or if not, some other even more imperceptible detail that he often called intuition. The whole thing only made sense to him in the end, but that was how it worked out since always.
Jo was all smiles as he walked around Mercury Stables, looking at every inch of the beautiful property while feeling butterflies in his stomach. He felt like a child about to get his first pony again.
He had made a call well in advance – the very minute he heard about the auction, actually – to schedule an appointment at the stables to try out some animals and, as usual, he was right on time. Bizarrely and uncomfortably punctual, in fact. Jo greeted Alexa with a warm handshake and words washed with excitement, although his good composure simply made no mention of changing anytime. The conversation extended naturally as the two walked to the stables, and then Alexa took over the dialogue to introduce some of the animals for sale. She talked a little bit about each one as they walked in front of the stalls, ended up being indiscreet in asking which profile he was actually looking for, and Jo was equally indiscreet in saying that... he had absolutely no idea. Simply because he didn't have a type at all. Jo liked one thing about the horses he rode: they were unique. He liked the easygoing, the challenging, the lazy, and even the hyperactive ones with a hard time respecting the reins and an annoying mania for turning their heads and biting his boots in the middle of the heating. So… yeah; there was the real challenge. Jo wasn’t coming home with a horse that he didn’t really like and connected with.
Alexa’s first suggestions were a couple of mares and stallions that were stunning at first glance to say the least, but none with the glow he was looking for. Then, the next one was a beautiful grullo mare that Alexa called Twizzlers. The reason: she was a complete maniac for treats. Coincidentally, Jo was also obsessed with candies, and there was the first sign he was looking for.
He approached the stall and let the mare make the first move. Twizzlers approached naturally, and began to do what she did best: investigate his hands, arms, and whatever was within reach with her lips. She even stretched her neck and turned her head like crazy to search better, and by that time she had gotten a couple of giggles out of Jo.
— Okay, yeah. I definitely want to try this girl out. May I? — he turned to Alexa, and Twizzlers took advantage to curl her lips onto his back.
— Of course, but you better hand some treats to her later.
Jo tacked the mare himself, using his own equipment for convenience, and was happy to see how good she looked in pink. Another big point for Twizzlers, he happily guessed.
Then, as he first mounted her, it was like a completely different horse. Twizzlers was very respectful, attentive and willing to work, and Jo liked every second of it. He followed Alexa to the outside arena to make sure the mare met all his basic riding requirements, and oh gosh. He really liked her, even more after taking the reins off and riding bridleless. It was like he trained her himself from the very start.
Alexa came back after a while to check on them. — So? What do you think? — she asked with a hand on her waist. The sun was already wanting to set by then, and Jo had been riding for over an hour. He barely saw the time pass.
— Honestly I can’t say how much I liked her. She seems the right choice, for sure. — he said as they stopped close to her. He leaned back in the saddle and rested one hand on the mare's croup. Twizzlers seemed equally relaxed.
Jo would make sure to fill her up with treats before leaving, whatever the final decision might be.
