You find yourself in a dark void.
You don’t know how you got there, nor why you are there.
The last thing you remember was going to bed in a less than stella inn in the slums. Because that was the only place you could afford, what with the whole adventurer job not going all that well for you.
You wander for a bit, or at least you think you are. You can’t really see anything, but you can feel your legs moving.
“Now now, my fine friend!. Someone like you shouldn’t really walk too far into the darkness. There do live some rather NASTY critters there, if i have to say so myself” A voice says from behind you.
You swing around to see a table, illuminated by a ray of light from above, but you can’t tell from what. And behind said table, sits a familiar looking face. One that you have seen from time to time in some of the inns you’ve been to, telling all manner of stories and the like to wanderers and so. But for some reason, they are ‘looking’ at you with their eyes closed, while they have their arms resting on the table with their hands clasped together in front of them. What are THEY doing here?.
You ask them what is going on, why are you here, and what the hell is this place. But to that they just chuckle, and gesture towards the seat in front of the table.
“Oh don’t worry about that for now!. How about first taking a seat? hm?. Because I have a deal for you, that will with guarantee blow your socks off! hehehe” They say, while chuckling a little. But with a bit of hesitation, and uneasiness of your current situation. You take a seat.
“Splendid!” They say, and clap their hands together. “Now then. From how you looked at me, I take it you know who I am. Right?” They ask, holding out their hand in a gesture of Acknowledgement. Waiting for your answer.
You tell them that you’ve seen them from time to time telling all manner of stories, but that about does it for what you know about them.
They lightly shake their head up and down in approval, while still having their eyes closed. “Yeah, that is ONE of my ‘Special’ traits. But that is not the only thing I'm known for”
“For the lot that knows me, and the likes of you too, I'm known as ‘The Entertainer!’. Happen to be rather down in the dumps?. Or are you just looking to find something that can just scratch that itch in the back of your head, that itch for excitement!. Then I'm the man you go to!. But I do not only offer quests, no no, I also offer rewards of that which your heart seeks!. Be it money, items, weapons, or information, it doesn't matter!. It can be yours if you have the heart and vigor for it!.” They say, in the most bombastic way that you have ever heard.
“So how about I set you up with a little quest. A simple quest. Just for you to get back on your feet, regain that vigor you once had. Who knows, maybe you will be the next big star among your ilk!” They say, as they lean their head on their hand, and hold out their other hand towards you.
“So what do you say...” They say, as they finally open their eyes. Only to reveal two yellow glowing orbs instead, as their grin contorts into a nightmarish one. “...want to shake the devil’s hand?. Hehehe” They chuckle.
After seeing this change of pace, you back off immediately, knocking the chair you were sitting on over.
They keep staring at you while you back away. Still having that smile on their face as they watch.
“Oh come now amigo!, no need to be shy!. Tho i can’t blame you, this is how everyone else before you reacted to my ‘Handsome’ look” They say, as they look to the side while holding their chin like they were getting a portrait.
You ask them, with a little fear and shaking voice, what the hell they are. To which they just laugh.
“Bwa ha haaa!. Pallio-Pal!, we are MANY things!, but at the same time NONE!. So why don’t we just say that I'm your bedstes of buddys! ey? heheha!. It’ll spare you a headache if you don’t look too hard into the small text of things!. Also, as i said before. I would refrain from getting too close to the darkness beyond this light. My fine friends and pals out there like to be ‘Mean’ to the ‘Small Guys’ like you. So please, *Snap!* Take a seat” They say, as the chair flips back up and turns to you.
You look at the chair, and up to the nightmarish face of the ‘entertainer’, before deciding to do as he says.
“Splendid!. Now as I was saying, I can give you an easy task that will get you back on your feet, and then some. Buuut, i can also let you decide on what YOU want, instead of gold” They say.
What?
“Oh!, Right!. I forgot to tell that little detail. You see, the beauty of my quests is that guys like you, adventures and so on, can customize their own quest!. Or more specifically, the difficulty of the quest, and whatever item your heart desires~. Tho if you are looking for an item that is completely BROKEN when it comes to power and such, then you’ll be going into the ‘High Risk, High Reward’ part of my dealings” They say, as they spin their hand in a ‘moving on’ sort of gesture.
“And to just make it clear before I forget. You will have to do a specific task, before you can have your reward. Pff! because where would the fun be at, if i just gave you the map straight to your desired item?. That would just be stupid!”
Wait, so if you wanted a… Spoon. Which would always heat up any form of soup, no matter what. You could get a quest for that?.
“Why yes!. Tho for random items like that or so, i would have to scover the multiverse for the wanted item in question. Then when I do find it, or something similar, I would then have to save guard your travel teleport there. Make sure no Mind Flayers or Void Monsters and such, locking on to your little tasty soul. Make sure no Reality guardians or similar come snooping around and blasting you to dust. OH!, and also make sure your poor feeble little mind doesn't snap like a twig, when you look into the great void that is between everything that is, was, and will be!” They say, as they look at you with their ever twisted smile, as if what they just said was normal.
……..Wha?
Then, a look of realization dawns on their face. “Oh wait, shit, heheheh, you weren’t supposed to know that, Heh, whoops. Let’s just pretend that you didn’t hear any of that Cosmic wombo jombo. Alright?” They ask, as they give you a double thumbs up.
Now wait a minute!………Wait…What were you talking about again?
“Why, just you deciding on what sort of quest you want!. That’s what we were talking about! Hahaha!” They say. But you get this weird feeling in the back of your head, like something just vanished from your mind.

After a bit of pondering, you manage to make a quest that should suit you nicely.
“Aaaaannnnd… That should do it!” They exclaimed, as they stamp one last time on the piece of paper, that is your quest.
“Okay…*Rolls up paper* Here you go!” They say, as they hold out the rolled up paper towards you. You reach out to grab it, but then they pull it back.
“Now just to let you know. These quests of mine do not have a time limit. So you can do them whenever, and wherever you want, but you CANNOT just abandon them. If you were to do that however… Weellll… Let’s just say that it’s NOT going to end so well for you” They say. As they hold it out to you again. “And that was all. Enjoy~” They say, as their smile twists further.
You reach out again, and this time you grab it. But when you do, you get this tingling feeling running through your arm as you hold it, but only briefly.
*Clap!* “Well!, if that was all. I’ll be sending you off on your merry way now!. For i have lot of other people like you to tend too up topside in the waking world, so i’ll bid you adieu for now *Clap!* *Clap!*” They say, as they clap twice and the light from above goes out with a ‘Kluk’. Leaving you in the dark.
Or that would have been the case if not for the Entertainer’s Glowing eyes and smiling teeth still looking at you.
You were about to ask what was going to happen, until they said “Enjoy the quest!~” And their mouth opened, showing razor sharp teeth, as they launched right at you.
You spring right up from your crappy bed with a shock and a scream, which lasted 5 seconds. You take in your surroundings, while at the same time feeling yourself up. Then when you have calmed down a bit, you slump back down on the bed. *Sigh* It was just a vivid nightmare… Or so you thought, until you looked to your side at the night stand, and saw the piece of rolled up parchment sitting on it.
And lying up against it, was another piece of paper with a smiling face on it. With words underneath it saying “I’ll be waiting~”
This was once again again, done by the ever phenomenal!
