What is a secret santa?

I've seen several variations, but generally speaking, you have a pool of artists who want to take part in it. The person managing it randomly assigns each artist to draw a present for one other artist in the pool. Sometimes they're paired, e.g. A draws a present for B, B draws a present for A. However it's often the case that they're completely random, e.g. A draws for B, B draws for C, D draws for A etc

I understand. Is it a secret if they know who made it?

It's secret until the gifts are exchanged, at least.
