He and Leo the Tiger first met at a drumming championship (similar to the modern competitions of DCI, or Drum Corps International), which the latter won, and the two have been best friends ever since.

NOTE: while each branch of the military on Kriegland had its own bands and ensembles, the ones John led represented the entire military as a whole. This helped cement his place in Krieglandonian history as one of its greatest drum majors, and for his dedications and services to Kriegland, King Leo V awarded him the SSSMSB (Stupendously Superiorly Shiny Medal of Superiority and Bravery), their version of the U.S. Medal of Honor or Canada's Victoria Cross. This is the most elite award any Krieglandonian could win.

John's band used to wear different colored uniforms covering all seven colors of the rainbow, with him wearing blue. Upon arriving on Earth, this was changed to have all members wear black uniforms with silver highlights. Each of John's band members (including John himself) also have the first letter of their name on their shako (parade hat), but with Hero Forge, that is not an option.

John's most notable band members and loyal followers include, but are not limited to, Corporal Leo the Lion (since there are too many lions in this world named Leo, he is addressed as Corporal Leo to distinguish him from other lions, such as Leo the Patriotic Lion, or Crush), playing bass drum; Smirtzan the Bobcat (who speaks with a British accent), playing field drum (rope-tensioned snare drum); Patton the Cougar (playing cymbals); Patriot the Tiger (real name Patrick, but he goes by Patriot; he is also known as the superhero Captain Carnivore), playing clarinet, Cat the Tiger (who speaks with an exaggerated Australian accent), playing trumpet; and Smog the Jaguar (Smog is his nickname; real name unknown), playing trombone.
